During a 3 week vacation in Georgia, I had Stepmania installed into my mothers computer. Now the timing was on the dot, and I didn't have a problem with it. Back at home [where I am now], I had no problems with timing either. But since I came back I noticed that either my keyboard is late, or I have to input steps a lot earlier than I did on my mothers comp. Whats weird is my computer is a lot better and faster than hers, so why would there be a lag in processing when I pressed an arrow key..?

In any case, how can I change the timing..?

If keyboard commands seem delayed on your computer, then that means that there is something seriously wrong with it. I suggest cleaning up your Hard Drive for starters, then I suggest upgrading a bit.

First play another game which requires you to use the arrow keys and see if there is any kind of lag there.

If there is, then I recommend getting a new keyboard (hahah edit before I accidently said a new computer riiight.gif)

Try playing with being online (restart first) and see if the stall goes away.

If it does, then search google for Lavasoft Adaware 6 and Searchbot S&D. Download these and install them. Then customize them to scan your whole hard drive and registry and update them and run them.

And then go to http://www.pandasoftware.com (even if you still lagged while offline) and scan your computer for viruses.

And then defragment your hard drive.

Umm I play Morrowind on the same comp and it doesn't seem to be the keyboard.

In any case, how can I change the timing of SM?

There has been discussion of implementing a global gap feature, but this was eventually decided against. If there is a timing problem, it's either a bug or a computer problem. Since Morrowind isn't a timing-based game, it will be harder to tell if your input is lagging. This is probably a bug. I would suggest reporting it on Stepmania's tracker, at http://sourceforge.net/projects/stepmania.

you can adjust the global gap through the stepmania.ini file, the same way you can manually adjust the judgement windows. if there is a lag, adjust by however many 10ths of a second it is off or whatever.

since you have a newer computer i would have to guess that you have a bad keyboard cable, your hard drive is fragmented (which i doubt since your other games seem to run fine), or your graphics card is less compatible with stepmania than the other one resulting in slower rendering of the arrows.

To test for a bad keyboard cable borrow a friend's keyboard and see if stepmania works with it. If it does, then you should probably get a new keyboard (or if you are a tech-happy person then cut a cable off of an old one and splice it onto your keyboard).

To check your hard disk for fragmentation go to Start-All Programs (In Windows XP which I assume you are running)-Accessories-System Tools and click on Disk Defragmenter. Click on the hard drive that stepmania is on (The C Drive unless you changed during installation) and click analyze. It'll probably say you don't need to defragment but if you have a lot of red lines go ahead and do it anyways.

To find out if your graphics card is incompatible with stepmania or not go to stepmania dot com and click on video cards. Look for your video card manufacturer and see if it is compatible (to find out what your video card is contact your computer manufacturer). If it appears to not be compatible try switching the video card with your mom's computer. If stepmania works then you should get a new video card.

If none of these solutions work than it is probably a program bug.
