I wasn't sure where to put this, but since most of the D-I-Y types hang out in here I felt it was appropriate.
Introducing my combination Stepmania Cab and Jukebox. It has been christened StepDuke. I designed and built it over the last few months. I wanted something incredibly simple, yet stylish.
Before I embarked on this project, I scoured the internet for examples of other peoples cabinets, I really struggled to find photos of homemade. I am not sure if that was because no one made them, or no one bothered putting photos online. So, to help others who are considering a similar project, here is a rundown on mine.
Originally I was going to build a replica SuperNOVA machine, but realized it would be far too big, especially when something 1/4 the size would do.
I used an angled face (12deg) as both a throwback to the angled face of traditional DDR cabinets and to project audio from the speakers at the right angle for the players ears.
The illuminated buttons work in both windows and Stepmania. Providing both player controls, and volume/track-select/play/pause when viewing media. The purple ball is a functioning arcade trackball, the mouse buttons are mounted on the left hand side of the cabinet. This allows for easy use without having to dig the keyboard out of the back.
I really wanted something with a powerful, high quality audio system, below are the specs for what I settled on.
-500W Response Car Audio Amp
-2x DLS 8" Subwoofers in a Ported Enclosure.
-Alpine 6.5" Type-R Splits
It really pumps out the bass without being "boomy", it makes hitting notes that much easier being able to time them with the thumps.
I run everything from an old PC I had lying around, a new videocard to handle the 24" screen was required. Used a 1TB HDD in an external enclosure to hold all my stepfiles/music/movies/tv shows.
I am thinking about putting some aluminum angle along the edges, giving it a bit of an old school touch.

Not bad. I preffer a more arcade style cabinet, but thats ok. You could always enclose the top and add some lights and stuff...Not make it really "bigger" but make it more closed in. |

I am actually working on the top portion as we speak. I decided to split them up for ease of transport and construction.
I am making a monitor box fitted out with 2 strobe lights and 4 CCFL's which flash on pad hits. |

Should have a couple up and running in 2 weeks if my bass ever manages to sell. If not, I'll just have 1 and a half StepMania cabinets up and running lol. _________________
