To put it bluntly, it's really annoying to me when random people start pulling out cameras and video cameras to photograph or record DDR playing in progress.

Thankfully, some arcades (e.g., Santa Monica Pier) have finally put up signs prohibiting filming without the consent of the arcade owner.

The main issue is that I don't know anything about who is doing the taping (especially when it's some random over-40 dude with the camera or video camera), or what they will do with the video (e.g., if they sell it, even if it's just one of their own home video productions, I will demand monetary compensation for the use of my likeness in the photo or video).

It's also interesting to note that in the State of California, California Civil Code 3344 provides minimum legal compensation if anyone sells photos or videos with a person's likeness in them without having obtained prior permission. But, that's only useful if a person can find out if the photos or videos are actually being sold, who is doing the selling, provided they are also in the State of California as well.

(And to save some people the trouble, I already know that someone will say something like if you don't want to be photographed or videotaped, don't play in public. So, I'm not looking for troll responses here, but a serious discussion.)

Ive never really know if some1 is videotaping me or not, but i never see any1. One time tho while i was attempting 2 free style (mainly goofing off and being an idiot) and my friend said that he thought he saw some1 in the corner videotaping me, so i dunno if that person did or not. Id be a little freaked out 2 if i knew some 40 year old guy video taping me. that would be wierd...

Well, i can see if they are recording themselves playing, i can see it being a proper idea, but other people without permission? Kinda weird...

Well, I actually confronted one dude (late 40's/early 50's) who decided to stick the camera through the glass and take photos while I was playing at Ray's Game Center. As he waited in line to buy movie tickets, I walked out of the arcade and told him he better erase those photos because if he distributes them without a model release I'll seek legal action.

The other time was at a Dave & Busters, where some guy (looked somewhat 40-ish) video taped me for an entire song (when I was playing on the 1P side), first from the left and behind me, then from the left and in front of me, but disappeared just after the song ended before I could confront him and challenge his video taping. One wonders what someone needs to do with DDR video content at that age, seeing as how most of the others who take photos are around college age.

Even though I may be an adult, it's still creepy to have that happening. It means I need to find less populated arcade areas to play DDR or ITG, or else find arcades with strict photography and filming bans.

I've had the occasional camera used on me before (don't know how it didn't break, though), but never being taped. It's usually some teenage group of girls who probably like to go back and giggle at their photos like "omg luk at the sweaty nerd!!11" I would be a little more suspicious of someone video taping me, though. I say they better at least have a good lie for why they're taping me, or something of theirs is going to break.

You really can sue anyone for anything in America huh... I think if I said anything like that to anyone here they would laugh their asses off. Besides, every otaku guy has a camera with 200x zoom to catch upskirt shots and to harrass girls. I think if they could have legal action taken against them there would be a LOT of lawsuits!

^ Note that I said legal action. That doesn't always mean lawsuit.

Legal action could be something as simple as a Cease and Desist letter, which--if complied with--requires no further action.

Suing would be called for if the Cease and Desist letter was not complied with, or if said individual was selling photos and videos using my likeness.

I'm not a lawyer, but site like FindLaw are very educational for reading up on legal issues even for the non-lawyer.

Ironically, I have the opposite problem...
The arcade I go to is located in a mall, and the mall has a strict "no photography or video recording" policy. This is annoying, because then I can't even ask one of my friends to record me playing or anything like that.
I even got yelled at by several security guards once for taking a picture of one of my friends who I hadn't seen in a few years.
I mean, yeah, I can understand if it was just me having to ask the manager at the arcade, but the security guards will walk in and tell us to put the cameras away. It's happened before.

Umm, no offense but you really think people are going to buy photos or videos of you? Thats pretty delusional. You can find many DDR videos of people who are pretty much better than you on the internet very easily.

Unless you are a really cute/hot girl making a porno on a DDR machine you aren't going to sell any video of you on a DDR machine to me! (actually even then I would torrent it E15.gif )

^ Your reply is very close to trolling when you imply that I think something and call it delusional. So, I think this will be the last time I respond to you in this topic.

The fact remains, I object to people photographing/video taping me when I play DDR, without my permission.

At that point, they could keep the photos and videos to themselves, they could share them for free over the Internet, or...yes, some people do sell their home videos for profit, regardless of how marginal the profit may be.

Whatever they may do with them--I know this much, they've already taped me without my permission. So, I have educated myself about the legal process, and thought I would inform others of the issues I have discovered and the legal remedies if necessary.

No implication from me necessary. You imply it yourself well enough.

I understand it when someone does it for them or thir friends but other people doing it is kinda creepy. I'm ok if I get put on video/pics by other players but they don't go out of their way to get me without asking first. Not like thats ever happened.

You don't know anyone in the 40's who plays DDR?

I'm not defending the "filming without consent" argument, but I don't see why it's any more or less disturbing in relation to the age of the filmer.

Haha. Stupid people at RGC. Some weird girls started taking pictures of my 9 year old brother do his qualifier at the second tournament.

The only thing I could see someone filming me doing is the one song I can do on stealth, and it'd probably be my bro. laugh.gif

I don't know why anyone would really care if they're being filmed. People walk by a DDR machine, think it's -insert thought- and take a picture or record it. Make it into a home video, good for you. Sell it, like I care. Feel sad for the idiot who bought it. Bringing action to it can even, like someone said before, prohibit all filming, and many people don't want that.

I would definetely feel the same way as well. I don't personally think I'm that great at the game, but if someone wanted to take a picture or videotape me while I was playing the game I wouldn't have any problem with it. It has happened before, I was playing the game when a family of 4 came up and asked me if they could take my pictures of me because I guess they never seen anybody play ddr/itg on heavy/hard.

Frankly we all have a close knit dancing community in our city, so if somebody was stalking us in order to take our picture or videotape us, we all have each other's backs. All in all, myself and the rest of my friends who play this game have no problems with random people taking pictures of us playing ddr/itg. We haven't had any bad or akward experiences, not from what I know anyway.

*shrugs* I've only even had videos taken by friends (that I know of) but if someone wanted to go through that much trouble to get a video, who am I to stand in their way? As long as there's no negative affect on me. Now if I suddenly found that video all over the internet in some derogatory fashion...then that'd be a different story.
