That's his point. If you didn't use terms like Maniac, S-Maniac, or SSR, then you're not oldschool in the slightest.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you use Heavy or Challenge exclusively with no use or understanding of the old terms then you're probably not oldschool at all.

Not old enough to most people here. I wouldn't worry about it, though. It's not like the actual core gameplay of DDR changed drastically since then.

Despite never trying Dance Dance Revolution, In The Groove, or most any rhythm game before 2006 (and not knowing anything about such games before 2005) and having yet to play a Dance Dance Revolution game that predates 2002 (Max is the oldest console game and EXTREME is the oldest arcade mix I have tried), I am aware of the original difficulty names including how paramount = seven feet and so on (except I do not remember reading about s-maniac). I own all seven Playstation 2 Dance Dance Revolution games plus In The Groove (I also own Pump It Up Exceed and Beatmania for Playstation 2 as well as StepMania and Dance Praise for the computer). The first Dance Dance Revolution game (and first Bemani game) I ever obtained was SuperNOVA 2. Difficult seemed tough to me at first, but it is not really worthy of the title now;D Because of this and the In The Groove expert difficulty being radically different from contemporary Dance Dance Revolution expert, I prefer to refer to the difficulties as beginner, light, standard, heavy, and challenge -- the last one is due to me never seeing the word "oni" in a game and what that word means. I usually type something like "heavy/expert" if I am refering to a song on SuperNOVA or some machine with the contemporary (and less accurate if you ask me) names.

I've always referred to the difficulties as Light, Standard, Heavy, and Oni. I started on DDRMAX back in 2003 and for a while the only DDR mixes in my area were Max 2 and Extreme, so I just got used to calling them by their Max/Max 2/Extreme names.

Beginner
Light
Standard
Heavy
Challenge

Sometimes I'd refer to Basic/trick/maniac/SSR and call 9-footers 'catas.' Man I feel old laugh.gif

Beginner / Light / Standard / Heavy ... I started playing when DDRMax2 CS came out.

I still stubbornly refer to 9's as "catas" despite having to explain what it means almost every time.

holy thread necromancy batman!

Also, depends on what game I'm playing, but I generally use game appropriate ones. In a more general sense, Challenge and Oni are interchangable, but generally challenge more than oni. Expert in SN+ and Heavy in Extreme.
