Yeah, the simfile help thread is dead.
I've been working on a simfile for a song called Country Girl. (You can get the file here if you want to try it out. It'll also make the rest of my text a lot easier to understand.) I used MixMeister to get the BPM, but I still feel that it's kind of off. It seems to drift between, in the beginning, being slightly late (I get -Excellents) and then, after the 16th runs, being slightly early (Excellent-). I can't decide if it's the offset or the BPM or the fact that it has stops, or something else entirely.
Also, I have no clue how to go about the BPM at the end of the song. It seems like the BPM should speed up for the last vocals (around bar 90), but I wouldn't know how to determine what it is. But, the last 6 notes in the song are on beat with the BPM staying the same (176.94) for the vocals. So now I don't know if I would need to make the notes match the vocals, even if they're significantly off-beat, since a speed up would make the last 6 notes offsync.
I hope some of that makes sense. And I sincerely hope someone wants to help, because this file is making me pull my hair out. X_X One last note: I know that the steps are what I want them to be. So if you actually do try it out, I'd rather not get feedback concerning the actual steps. I just need help with the overall syncing of the file. Thanks! _________________

Well that was your first mistake.
I have it; it sucks. It gave Insertion a BPM of... 126, I believe. *slaps forehead*
On the parts where it's early, speed up/slow down the BPM manually until it feels properly synced. Same for the parts that are late. That's the only thing -I- can suggest. |

Yeah, I know. I can't find any solid BPM-reading software. All I do find is stuff that makes you hit the spacebar for the beats (which isn't accurate at all...I got about 4 different readings doing the exact same thing for one of them...) and some ones that make you pay. =| _________________

Any BPM calculator is going to give an obviously wrong BPM on a song with an inconsistent rhythm. Otherwise MixMeister's calculator is acceptable. _________________

Here's how I calculate BPM, and it's not failed me yet. I take the closest approximation to the BPM and set it to that. Then I do several measures of straight quarter notes with the assist tick on. You can tell from listening whether the BPM you guessed is slower or faster than the song, and you can fine-tune it from there. Easy as pie. _________________
