Can I set it to English? Or will I have to learn Japanese? I'm thinking about getting Pop'n for Dreamcast, but this is something I'd like to know before I do. Also, I have a few questions. One, which one should I get? I'm a complete beginner. I've never played Pop'n before, in fact, I've never even been in the presence of a machine or CS verion.
Two, are there any articles around that will tell me what all the Japanese stuff says? If it does have an English translation, I'm going to have to know how to get into the options so I can change it to English. Alright, thanks.

Ehhh

Pop'n probably has the most Japanese out of the Bemani games, and the games before 6 (IE: everything on DC) don't even have banners to help you tell the songs apart. I don't think menus would be much of a problem, though.

If you can read Katakana, you should be OK, but otherwise you're probably going to have a hard time with song selection.

I don't even know what Katakana is X(
Is there a way to change the language to English? That would be great.

katakana is a set of japanese characters usually used to represent japanese words based of foreign words(such as banana in japanese is banana, and it's wrote in katakana).

Wow i'm rusty on my japanese....

anyhow i reccomend(if you can) taking japanese in high school so you can take a language you'll actually USE on a regular bases.

im gonna be a freshmen in high school next year and have about as much japanese under my built as a 2 year old....haha...

TAKE JAPANESE IN HIGH SCHOOL IF YOUR HIGH SCHOOL OFFERS IT!!

if not(coming from a person whos gonna be a freshmen in high school) you can do what we did.

i go to a school that opened 2 years ago. Its a midddle school/high school. The 1st year they offered japanese. The 2nd year they decided not to. Many people got mad. So we started a little japanese club that was pretty fun that met every monday and friday after school. Once we heard they were having some "foreign language meeting" in some conference room we decided to do what a bunch of people who want to learn japanese would do and march in and talk about why they should offer japanese next year. They told us if we got a list of 25 people, they'd have japanese next year. SO we did all that and BAM now we have a high school japanese class.

Now, none of this really has do with pop n' music, but the point is this: if you plan on importing games(unless you have dreams to live in mexico or something), take japanese. It will serve you well. Then you can face import games and say "BLAH!!! I ALMOST COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND YOU!" with an iron fist and wont have to worry about a game having too much japanese.

Wow, the things you type at 4 AM.

I've wanted to do that for soooo long. But I don't think the school I'm going to offers it.
Anyway, does anyone know if there are any guides online that will tell me what everything says? And does anyone know if there is a way to change the langauge to English?

I would just go ahead and get a PS2 and mod it. Honestly, PS2 Pop'n owns DC Pop'n in all ways imagineable. More games, more songs, fluid animation, speed mods, everything is better on the PS2. I dont even think it's worth it to get the DC Pop'n, because it'll probably get old quick.

For the third time, no there isn't a way to change it to English, there's no one that has a translated game, and all versions of the game are Japanese. The older games have a "shortcut" mode where it just lists the romanized genres of the songs (until Pop 'n 7).

If you want to read a fair majority of the song names, find a chart of katakana and hiragana, and start memorizing (they really shouldn't be hard to find, hell I can whip one up in like 10 minutes). Then practicing writing and reading them on your own. Most of the kanji used in the game are generally more difficult however.

If you want to understand things, be ready, willing, and excited to take multiple years.

If you just want to understand how to read hiragana/katakana, do what Baka Orochi said and pull up some lists online. This is what I used:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana

It's really, really easy if you care to put any effort into it at all. I'm told you can memorize them with flash cards and two hours, though I've just been trying to decipher random shit in Pop'n and Mother 2 and making decent headway (more with Katakana, though).

I've heard that modded PS2's tend to have problems loading games and stuff. That's why I plan to get a Japanese PS2 instead.

Not unless you really screw it up. I would suggest getting a fliptop and a Swa p Magic disk. That's what I have right now, and I havent had a single disk read error yet, even after 3 years.

In other news, I tried to learn that katakana thing, and found it to be very hard. I don't think I can learn it.
