i'm a n00b doubles player. i can do all 1-8 and around half the 9s. i haven't actually played all the double 9s yet. anyways i'm wondering what the correct technique is for a no bar player at the more advanced levels. like for singles no bar i found that minimal feet movement / flat footed play helped me a lot on passing expert 11+. i'm guessing the advice for doubles would be different. |

There is no technique. ITG doubles has waaaaaaaaaaaay to many wierd and long crossovers and Jumps. You will not be good at doubles if you don't use the bar. And you will probably get less respect because your scores will suck.
Take this advice.

i think playing with the bar gets no respect. i mean why would lilq put up no bar scores if he thought he got enough respect playing with the bar... even when 99% of people rape the bar - the fact is people undermine this by saying "oh but they used the bar." |

You are not LilQ. LilQ would get respect if he took a dump on the pad and then walked off because he didn't hit any mines. _________________

If you're after respect, you shouldn't be playing a dancing game.
Not to mention that if you really change your own preferred playing style because you think that some random people on the Internet are going to turn their nose up at you over a stupid game then you seriously need to stop being so self-conscious.
If you want to learn to play no-bar, that's great. Just don't play no-bar just because you're worried about what other people are going to think of it. You'll be much happier in the long run if you do what you truly want to do. |

i've playing ddr since it first came it on socal. and no i've never used the bar. and i think using it is ridiculous. i don't care if othe rpeople use the bar. i don't use the bar because i find it retarded. this is what people in socal thought - and still do think. even if people peopel bar rape now. |

So basically you want to learn a technique for getting better, but you don't want to use the best technique for getting better that there is? God I don't understand why people are still like this. We all learn to flatfoot, we all learn to make our stomps audible and clear, but yet people still can't learn to use the bar. I don't get it.
Try Renaissance Expert Doubles please, and then get back to us. _________________

there is no technique for no bar, just play without the bar.
Geez, everyone has a preference whether to use bar or no bar.
Now granted, pretty much everyone that competed at the doubles tourney in the NAT a little over a week ago did use the bar, but again, it's a simple preference.
I was one of two that did not frequently use the bar in the tournament.
As for foot placement, I think that every single song has a different foot technique. I suggest maybe studying each chart individually, and come up with a technique for the song. I do that, since the wrong technique makes you end up in an awkward situation. _________________

I believe that I am proof that doubles can be done quite efficiently without the bar. I've gotten 98% on almost all the 9's and gotten no less than 94% on all the 10's. I've easily passed the 11's and most of the 12's. _________________

Here's a surprising technique in case you're wondering.
Flatfooting is the way for single. I know there are good toes players, but flatfooting just seems easier. However, double is not single.
The majority of the time you're playing doubles, you can flatfoot, but some patterns make you jump accross the pad so much, you may want to use toes to help spring accross the two pads. This is what I use at the end of oh, let's say, Wake Up Expert doubles. I'm tall enough to do the splits and flatfoot basically, but I actually find it easier to move my center of gravity and spring with my toes.
That being said, most patterns even in double merit flatfooting.
Oh, and about the bar, I can respect why a person doesn't choose to use it. I personally find the game more FUN without the bar. Sure, it may help your score a little (Though my FA is worse with bar), but it just isn't fun anymore. If that means I'll never be a top tier player, then so be it. I'd rather have fun playing a game because games were made to have fun.
Doubles without bar is especially fun because it feels more like dancing as opposed to sitting between two bars and hitting things with your feet, but to each his own. _________________

I find playing doubles with no bar is much more satisfying when you combo long harder streams than doing the same with the bar.
For singles it barely matters anymore. _________________

i play flat footed with barely any movement for singles but can't do this for doubles. i'm not sure what height has to do with ff. i guess it might have to do with movement across the pads in doubles. i'm 6ft and can basically play as if i'm raping the bar without touching it since i have long legs and good balance (from playing without the bar since the start).
i can play on my toes - but this is quite draining. i do this for mines / across the pad runs, but will switch to ff when there are single pad streams. i'm def. getting better but i'm no where as good on doubles as i am with singles (almost all 11s - usually 3x, no bar, flat footed) |

this mirrors my thoughts basically. doubles is fricken hard, but I'm having fun learning to do all kinds of twists and crossovers without double stepping or restricting my movement with the bar. Singles, I'll use it sometimes, and sometimes I won't. I almost never do at home, but the arcade has the ideal bar setup so I'll take advantage of it always in the arcade. doesn't really matter on singles. _________________

Try lowering your center of gravity(bend your knees a little more then usual) and for the turns you should try being on your toes so you can pivot easier. I play with the bar 99.9% of the time on doubles though. But for getting up from hands i use this method. |
