Came out today, who got it? I got it! I'm pleased with it, although the songlist is a liiiiiitle lackluster especially considering their all covers, blech. The good thing is they're at least DECENT covers; Killer Queen by Queen sounds almost like the real deal, but not quite.
The game is very, very short. All music games are, but jeez, there is very little to do in this game. The game has 34 songs in total, and three mini-games. Two-player mode yields nothing but a two-player Taiko Mode (play until you want to stop, there is no song limit) and two-player mini-games. I was kind of dissapointed to see they took out the Battle Mode from Taiko no Tatsujin 3 That was a GREAT game to play with a friend. Oh well.
The controller is SOLID. You can beat the crap out of it, which you kind of need to do because it has trouble registering all the hits; especially the side hits. Really annoying, but you get used to it. I noticed they put a bar on the face of the drum to seperate the left and right side, which they did not do for the arcade game. This causes some problems, because if you hit it it won't count and this has been happening A LOT to me; even though the thing is very thin.
I recommend it, but it is a pretty lackluster showing. One positive is that it's cheaper to buy this game+drum and then importing the Japanese games, rather then buying their drum+games. I'm thinking of doing that, because I only want to play about half of the songs in this game =/ _________________

I bought it. Yes, the majoritly of the songlist was horrible, but I have nothing to compare it to. I'm just glad the Katamari song is on there.
The mini-games aren't very fun at all. I tryed them each once, and went back to the main game mode. There's still songs that I can't pass, and I have a lot of room for improvement. It's a fun game overall, I recommend it. _________________

The Namco originals in this completely rock. e.g. Taiko March. I just about shit myself when the Sky Kid music started playing.

I read about the controller issues in the IGN review and I was hoping it was just that the reviewer on IGN didn't know how to play the game correctly rather than the drum not being of top quality but since you also mentioned the controller has problem registering hits, I guess it's a real problem. I would have thought that with all the home versions Namco has released, they would have fixed the problem by now (figuring this has always been a problem?) but I guess not. |

It's not a big problem, really. You just have to be more firm with the controller than you might first expect. Very gentle taps won't do.

Just got the game last night and I can't stop playing! I never import and I probably never will so it's nice to have a new music game with a controller to play. I'm so bad and I feel so embarassed! Hardest I can do is the occasional 5 star songs, but I'm usually restricted to 3 and 4 stars. Oh well, I'm getting better! _________________

Just got that, too. I'm kind of annoyed that it doesn't make it harder, just raises the pass line from 80% to 90% =/ _________________

It does? I didn't even notice that. A lot of songs are harder, you must not be playing the right ones. Carmen Prelude is a lot harder, and REALLY fun. _________________

Okay, you were right... I played it just now on the controller (actually makes the game a little harder) and damn... I don't see how anyone can do some of those songs on the Taiko drum on oni =/ _________________

Got it last night. I think I'm one of like few that enjoys the songlist to this and Donkey Konga...everyone else won't stray passed the Namco originals and classical songs. It's really loud, though...which is to be expected of a drum, so I can't really complain about that.
Difficulty-wise, I'm quite happy with the game...it'll keep me challenged for a long while, unlike Donkey Konga. Love the songlist, but wish that there was more stuff to do or more things to unlock. With a game THIS tripped-out and cute in design, ya'd think they'd put more stuff in there to do... But it's really fun, and I'm having a blast with it so far. (And, is it just me, or do the drumsticks...er....seem kinda...suggestive?)
Anyway, on a slightly related note, this makes me wanna import at least one Taiko game from Japan...any suggestions as to which one would be good or any links to some songlists and/or other modes that are on the other games? _________________

It's just you. I immediately saw them as sticks that would be used for a Taiko drum.
And how are you supposed to unlock the movies? I have almost all of the songs passed on the highest difficulty and still don't have any movies. _________________

I was wondering the same thing, except I haven't passed all the songs on the highest difficulty because I can't process those hits fast enough ESPECIALLY that Geiji song, yikes... _________________

I'd say you have a little problem, then.
Interesting fact: The drums ARE the Japanese drums. These weren't made for America The sticks say "Namco" on one side and "Taiko no Tatsujin" on the other side. Also, on the underside of the drum the date says 2002. If these had been made for the American release, they would say 2004 _________________
