Just curious. And also, where can I get some stepfiles for DDR songs, and how would I hook up a ddr pad?

I recommend http://www.stepmania.com . StepMania.

About getting simfiles, there's a sticky thread up above this one that has a bunch of good links. Here are two to get you started:

http://rydia.net/udder/ddr/
http://www.ddrstyling.it/

About the pad, I'll let someone else answer. Enjoy!

K. So, do I just load the step file one place, and the song, another place, that's it? Or is there some hard setup required? And dose it use the buttons(Triangle, square, circle,X) when the pad's in. If it does, I'll just figure out a switch.

Dunno about the pad, to be honest, I go play DDR for real, then I come and just chill and play SM with the keyboard =D

To install songs, just go to the StepMania folder in C:\Program Files, then go to Songs, then make a folder for whatever mix the song you're adding is in...into this folder you put all of your songs..so, if you wanted to put, say, Sandstorm, it would look like this

Stepmania --> Songs --> 6th Mix --> Sandstorm (and then within this would be the mp3, dwi, background, etc)

This, and other issues, are clearly outlined in the Getting Started Tutorial and FAQ on www.stepmania.com

Well, I wouldn't download them right into the Songs folder, cuz they're zipped, so you're gonna have to unzip em anyway...but whatever way you choose is fine.

DWI is for users who:
  • Have low end systems
  • Are more interesting in playing simfiles than making them
  • Don't want to use too much space

SM is for users who:
  • Have high end systems or fast video cards
  • Want to play with modifiers not in DDR
  • Want to contribute ideas for improving the program(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=37892&atid=421369)
  • Have simfiles that are off-sync with the music and want to correct them or want to make simfiles themselves
  • Have found and want to use characters (Don't ask me where to find them, I have been explicitly instructed not to tell anyone)

Links to simfiles are listed at http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/links.php.

Information concerning pad configurations is in the DDR Simulator FAQ.

eh?

I use mostly DWI, even though:
-I have an AMD 2.1 with 256megs SD-RAM, a fairly powerful machine
-Make dozens of DWIs myself, in notepad
-With a 60gig drive, space isn't much concern

I find DWI *alot* more easy to use because of the profile remembering my commonly played mods, more straight forward system of sort chaning, and the general lackage of all the bells and whistles found in SM, which confuse the hell out of me.

a good pad that you might find to like is from buynshop, search for VG-DDR-PC pad w/converter. Just mod it a little on the outside of the pad so it won't move around so much, mods only costed me 5 bucks, so it's cool =D

This is the ol' DWI vs SM thread that I don't like having for reasons SPAM has posted where he obviously favors SM.

The simulators are both free, download them and try for yourself.
