Given some mp3... how would you determine the Beats per Minute?

Is there an application that can do that?

Some do, but they's 'spensive. Traktor does a good job, but it's still not 100% unfortunately. You can pick up a free demo somewhere I think... MJ studio also does this, but I have no idea if it's still available for free or not. Look for it though.

Use XSteps. It's free, and it's fairly accurate if you take your time making multiple trials. Even when it's off, it's only off by 1-2 BPM, so you can easily adjust that (if you're using SM to make the files).

XSteps is terrible at finding gaps though - my suggestion would be to count beyond the starting point - that is, count beyond the first beat, and let's say you count 2 full bars of notes before you take the inital gap. then all you have to do is subtract the time for the 2 bars from the inital gap (8/BPM*60).

Or get CoolEdit, and use it's Edit Tempo function to determine the BPM to a fairly precice measurement, and touch it up right in the program (and CoolEdit also gives you a decent gap value to use as well, just add 20 and go).

just do a google search fo winbpm, and use that, it gives a really accurate reading after about a minute.

I don't personally like winBPM, it's very prone to human error. If you feel like throwing down a few hundred dollars, both American DJ and Gemini make rack equipment BPM counters. I don't know how reliable they are, but oh well. It's yet another way.
