New RedOctane Pad Tryout in Northern California

RedOctane is organizing a tryout event for a new metal pad that they will release soon. The tryout will be held this Friday, August 1st at 2:00pm at the RedOctane office in Sunnyvale, California. Slots are extremely limited (only 10 people will be chosen), so sign up now!

Would this be the metal pad that is supposedly similar in design to the CF pads? Wouldn't surprise me. The "other" style of metal pads doesn't seem to be too durable.

Oh I remember this pad. This was the prototype that was at RO's booth at Fanime 2003. They were nice. Quiet and responsive.

If anybody here actually gets to be a tester for their pad, please make 1 thing straight: We the DDR community will not purchase an expensive hard pad that has problems. None of us want to spend $100+ on a pad that gives us trouble that probably could of have been prevented if not for clumsy design and manufacture.

I actually do have hopes that this hard pad will be worth purchasing and it won't be too expensive either. Red Octane seams like a cool company.

The point of a metal pad (or any expensive pad) is to make sure that you get exactly what you pay for. Because this metal pad was designed by RedOctane, you're going to get bigger bang for your buck, with a decent warranty to back it up. We've put this pad through it's paces over the past few weeks with constant play, and it's held up quite well, even after a few dismantling sessions. Good times!

I'm hoping some of the people who get chosen have also played on the Cobalt Flux pad before, so we can get some educated comparisons.

EJ, that's also a suggestion for you to consider. If you really want these things to fly off the shelf and are 100% confident that your pads will hold up to the competition, pick people who HAVE played on the Cobalt Flux before so they can give testimonials on equal / better quality of your metal pads.

Hmm... a suggestion on improving the metal pad:

I've seen many complaints about Metal Pads not working when plugged through a USB convertor to PC, due to the fact that they require 5V of power while USB only provides 1.5V. Any plans for optional power plugs?

Something that people need to also consider is that quite a few of the Red Octane employees are DDR players themselves. They understand the trials of finding a good pad and do *cough*extensive testing*cough* before the final product goes out there.

A 60 day guarantee will not cut it with me when it comes to a $200 pad. Why? Because, it gives me no confidence that my pad won't break after about 4 months. I understand that many electronics only have 30 or 90 day guarantees, but they're not really compareable to a DDR pad. If you get a TV, and nothing breaks in the first 30 days, there is a pretty darn good chance that it's going to last years. If you get a DDR pad, and it last 60 days, all you know is that you haven't worn it out. Like cars, DDR pads are sort of known to have mileage. No one is actually sure how many miles their pad will go, but we know a lot of pads start having problems after a month or two (even the expensive plastic and metal ones), maybe this is about equivalent to a car going 100,000 miles or so. Unfortunately, 2 months of use is not worth $200 for me. Guarantee me my pad won't wear out in the first year, and I'll send you $200 right now. ^_^

If not, I'll go get me some fake ignition pads off Ebay. They each last me a couple months, are fairly responsive, and can be replaced for $20.
