hi, just wondering if anyone who plays stepmania could help me out. i was thinkin of building a computer that would only be for stepmania. If any stepmania players could possibly post there system specs, and the amount of lag they get during game play, i would greatly apprieacate it. Thanks so much!!! |

OMG!!!!!!
I've always wanted to do this!!
I'd say, if your looking to keep this cheap:
600 Mhz or 800 Mhz (depends on amount of songs and I'm assuming you'd have a lot)
128 MB of RAM or 256 RAM
20 Gig hard drive for songs and stuff like the operating system........
hmmmmmm...... Graphix and Video cards I have no idea
Good luck on this! Hope to see when its done

I can run the latest CVS fine at 800x600 resolution on my old PC's 32mb integrated graphics card, but I'd suggest getting a better one so you can have higher res. But I'd say 32mb's a minimum, if not 64mb. |

I say at least 256 RAM to run all the graphics (Characters and Backgrounds etc.). About graphics, I think a decent one is enough. (I have a TNT36 or something. |

My computer can run everything you want to run. Before i reformatted my hard drive I had over 2000 songs and ran background videos. Now i have about 200 songs, run background videos and characters at around 300FPS most of the time at top resolution and everything at the top fullscreen. My computer has an athlon XP 1500+, 256mb SDRAM geforce 4 mx440 128mb ddrram. |

I've always wanted to do this too, only I also want to build a cabinet for it. It'd be pretty easy, actually. Just buy the arrow and start buttons from happcontrols.com and tear up your $5 and sodder things into place, and get some cheap flimsy wood from homo depot or something (what, you don't plan on matrix walking, do you? Keep it cheap!). If you really wanted to go all out you could even buy some high quality metal pads! Lik-sang has that USB adapter everyone's going ape^&*# over, right? Oh yeah, don't forget to pick up some Bose speakers! As for keeping costs down, don't buy an internet connection or network adapter for this computer. Just burn stepmania's installer to CD, and save all the songs, the skin, the bg animations etc. to .smzip (one of the most brilliant parts of stepmania!) and burn them too. You could even use a cheapo low speed CD ROM drive. It'd be slow, but it'd keep costs down!
As for my system specs... I'm using a GeForce3, 256 megs of ram, can't remember my processor speed, and I'm running off an external USB2 hard drive. Oh, right, I'm using WinXP, forgot about that. I get no latency at all. The ONLY problems I have are sometimes steps don't register (don't know if this is a memory problem or if my keyboard is just finnicky, but it's really rare anyway) and some of the BGanimations seem to not quite meet up. I'm running at 1024x768. It takes SM a while to get to the song select screen, but I hear SM is just slow like that.
Please show us all what you came up with when you get this done! I'd love to see! _________________
