The wait's over. It runs beautifully on my system, too. biggrin.gif

Edit: After giving it a bit more play time, I can give it a bit of a deeper review. It really does run smoothly most of the time, but there are a few annoying "glitchy" moments. The music sort of skips - it sounds like a skipped CD. The arrows sort of "skip" when the music does. This isn't a big deal, and I'm sure it'll be fixed in future releases. It's a little slow to load songs, but again, it's not a huge deal, and it's reparable.

Just so you know, I'm reviewing from my PowerBook G4. 867 mHz, 640 MB RAM.

It looks good, too. It doesn't take full advantage of the Mac's graphical capabilities, (that's probably too much to expect) but it does look good. Its interface and gameplay are pretty much identical to the latest PC CVS versions.

I tried it, and I found out that it definately DOESN'T like OS 9. :/ It was beautiful, and ran pretty well.. but when it fricked with my OS 9 apps. It was either Stepmania, or classic mode. I chose classic mode. So I trashed it all and my problems went away.. ;_;

I should note that background movies, visualizations, and Pump/Para/EZ2 support are not currently working, in my testing.

But it's pretty solid otherwise. Slow with 480+ DWIs, though...

It runs just fine on Panther too. No matter what resolution/color depth/etc settings I use it runs at the same speed. The skipping of songs appears to be caused by week sound code, remove announcers and turn off assist ticks and it stops (at least on my 667 powerbook).

You might want to try re-nicing it to run with higher priority.

With my P.O.S. 500mhz G3 iMac, I can run StepMania. But barely. I have to shut off all my other apps for decent performance at low resolutions. And the sound is very choppy for my, and songs always load and play late. I didn't think it was a file problem, probably the weak sound drivers and my crap-o-matic computer.

Heh, I can't believe how slick this thing is for a first release.

Anyone know of any .smzip utilities for Mac?

Edit: Oh hell, you can just rename it into a zip.

Stepmania should recognize the .smzips without you needing to rename the file. If it doesn't, that's one more bug we can add to the list.

.smzip doesn't seem to bind to Stepmania for OS X or anything. Here's the easiest way I've found to install smzips, though:

1) Download the smzip, and place it in the Stepmania folder.
2) Open a Terminal window, and cd over to your Stepmania folder.
3) Type
Code:
unzip (whatever).smzip
and hit return.

Stuffit Expander refuses to write files into already existing folders, for some reason, so using the command line unzip gets around this.

This said, I don't think the release packages for the add-on games (Pump, Para, Ez2) work with the current CVS version. Or at least I can't get them to work...

I just downloaded it and it's really good. A little slow but it still runs very well. But I only have 21 songs though. I'm real impressed.

Erm, if you're not going to add anything besides an unwarranted flame to the discussion, why did you say anything at all?

Back on topic, SM seems to run slowest if I've forgotten to quit Safari or iChat before I run it. It shouldn't run all that slowly at all, though, since my RAM's maxed on my PowerBook. . .it seems a little RAM-intensive.

I got mine working right away, no problems at all. I pulled about 300 songs off of my friend's PC, so I'm happy!

I'm going to get a metal pad soon, I wanna hook it up to my powerbook G4/667.

Has anyone hooked a Dance pad up to their mac yet? if you have, tell me how well they've worked for ya.

Mmm... Downloaded... Now where the hell are step files? I've gotten incomplete versions of Bag, Sakura, and Dance Dance Revolution. Why don't people bother including beginner steps? *cries* They should be complete DDR songs!

Hey Remy, what do you use for IRC on a Mac. I've looked and never been able to get anything to work.
