I own a couple of systems that are placed in a local arcade, an 8th mix DDR and a Soul Calibur 2. Both are nearly paid for, and I'm wondering what, in your opinion, should be the next game I purchase?

Let me give you a budget before you guys start saying "initial D" or "IIDX"

I have about 3K to spend, and I'm in East Texas. Fighting, driving, and gun games do well, as does DDR (strangely enough)

Suggestions?

Nate

I guess if you were doing this for money, I'd say another fighting game like Capcom vs. SNK or something. It's hard to buy a music game with that little money.

I would say go with Initial D, because as much as I love to see another arcade with IIDX, it won't make too much money because the learning curve is so hard. Like any random person walks in trys it, it is impossibly hard, they never try it again. At the same time, there will be a group that will play it like religiously, but they won't play enough to make the machine worth it. Now Initial D any gamer could walk into an arcade and play this, plus it has AWSOME music, I mean SpaceBoy, how can you not love that song. Plus 3K doesn't seem like enough for a IIDX.

You might be able to find a decent Guitar Freaks for that price. Look for 4th, 5th, or 6th. The GF at Putter's in Kalamazoo rakes in tokens like crazy.

2nd Mix is decent, but for a real cash eater, look for 4th Mix. It's got lots more songs, plus most of the classics from 2nd.

Speaking of arcade machines, what's the most popular Bemani game?

That's hard to say. What's the most popular car? :-)

You'll just have to keep an eye on what everybody wants in your area. Hell, even if Beatmania IIDX is the so called "most popular Bemani," (which I doubt,) it wouldn't make sense to install one if everyone in the vicinity of the arcade wants Martial Beat and nothing else. The machine wouldn't be getting peanuts for revenue.

Haha I guess you're right. DDR is the most popular in our area.

Yeah it is, I think, 'cause I saw Ver. 2 for about $6000.

I just read the first post again, and feel like an idiot riiight.gif , I though he said he wanted either a IIDX or Initial D. Well with that in mind... Maybe try a DanceManiX machine, because that seems like the second bemani game most arcades get, and it does well. If I recall correctly they aren't much more than $2000.

In the USA it's easily DDR. Outside of California, it's the only bemani you're likely to see. In Japan, it's whichever non-DDR bemani came out most recently. Now it's IIDX, last month it was DM8, before that it was PNM 9. New = god in Japan. DDR doesn't get much love anymore. Overall, PNM is probably the most popular.

My suggestion - not sure how much it costs, but people LOVE those big multiplayer video blackjack machines, especially in places that don't have gambling. You'd definitely make a lot of money with one of those.

If you have an Extreme machine and it does well, people in your area are beggining to warm up to other Bemani. I'd shoot for a 2DX machine, but as someone else mentioned, it's kinda hard to start out with and the machines are hella-expensive. I haven't seen even a lowely, older mix for under $5000, but maybe I'm wrong. I know Initial D rakes in a killing, but as someone also stated, they're hellishisly expensive. If you saved for a while though, it'd be really worth it. I myself don't play, but the machine at our arcade ALWAYS has 2 people on it and I'm sure they make a good $200+ a day off of it. It'd pay for itself very quickly, believe it, but it's a good amount of cash to put down for one. With that said, you'd want something user friendly, but not too heavy on the wallet. Pop'n Music would be really cool, but it comes off as 'gay' or 'queer' to sooo many kids it's disturbing. Para Para Paradise and Dance ManiaX *sorta* fall into the same boat, but I think Guitar Freaks or DrumMania would be instant hits. They're relativly easy to pick up and play, or at least DM is, I've never tried GF, but they both would get attention due to the controllers. The whole Drum or Guitar idea is an instant hit with just about anyone, where I don't think many people would feel comfortable playing Pop'n, Dance ManiaX, PPP, etc., especially since they'd be new to the area. Also, the type of people who go to the arcade where your games are at make a big difference; if you're getting a lot of the teenage crowd, a 2DX machine might do pretty well. Anyways though, my best recommendation to you would be either Guitar Freaks or Drummania if you're going with Bemani, but I think that Initial D or 2DX would do decently too if you can come up with the money for them.

Yeah, DDR seems to have the biggest following overall in the US. But along southern Michigan, it's really surprising how big of a following there is for GF and DM. I went to Ohio a few times, and I was like, "Where's all the Guitar Freaks and Drummania machines??? All you have is Max 2 and Extreme! Argh!"

Michigan GF/DM that I can think of off the top of my head:
DM 1st Mix - Putter's in Portage
GF 7th Mix - Putter's
DM 1st Mix - Pinball Pete's in East Lansing
GF 2nd Mix - Royal Scott Bowling in Lansing
GF 4th Mix - Pinball Pete's in East lansing
DM 8th Mix - Blaster's in Brighton
GF 9th Mix - Blaster's
DM 8th Mix - Marvin's in Farmington
GF 6th Mix - Marvin's
DM 8th Mix - American Fun Center in Westland
GF 9th Mix - American Fun Center
DM 3rd Mix - Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor
GF 3rd Mix - Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor
GF 4th Mix - Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor
GF 7th Mix - Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor
GF USA - Gameworks in Auburn Hills

That's a TON for such a small strip along the south of the state, and there are probably more that I haven't seen yet. These are just the ones I've actually played. Some have been upgraded since I saw them, though, like most of those DM 8 machines.

So to conclude, if you want a good supplement for DDR, get a GF or DM. I would recommend GF 6th and DM 5th. The only versions I haven't played are GF 5th and 8th, and DM 2nd, 6th, and 7th.

Definetly think a GF or DM would work, provided there's no other arcade in your area that you can think of that already offers it. Assuming you're the first in the region to really have one (and at least a SOMEWHAT newer version, such as GF6th/DM5th or above) you could really rake it in, as well as starting a new following in that area.

GF is usually cheaper to buy then DM, although I like Drummania better^_^;;; but GF usually pays for itself a tad better, +it has slightly less maintainence, I would think ( I don't know, but from what I've seen, DM and the whole "WHACK THINGS" ethic would wear that machine down more then GF).

As for another fighting game, its up to you. You could get another one, provided the arcade doesn't have SNK vs Capcom 2 already (since you only own 2 machines in that arcade, right? But that doesn't mean the arcade doesn't have other fighting machines) but I don't care for fighting games mostly-and you did ask to specify a music game(oh, wait, you didn't-oh well).

See what you can do with 3 grand for like a Guitar Freaks 5th, or a Drummania 4th, or a Guitar Freaks 6th or such...anything in the 4/5/6 range works well. I wouldn't get GF4th, cuz it has the old interface and I hate that interface>_<;;; yeah, but for your budget, GF5th or 6th, or DM 4th or 5th (cuz that way you might be able to hook up a session mode later, provided you get the properly matching machine) sounds good.

I think Marvel VS. Capcom 2 would rake in easy money. But I assume you have it already, since it's practically an arcade staple now.

I dunno... $3000 doesn't allow for much in the way of Bemani.
