I'm using a pretty good computer (1.3ghz, 320mb 100mhz SDRAM, GF4 Ti4200), and SM is a damn slow prog. The animations are very laggy and it takes forever just to get to a damn song because of it. Even on the lowest graphical settings it's still really slow.

Do you all have godlike PCs or something? Cause I consider mine above average for gaming (games like Morrowind and Earth & Beyond run just fine for me), but I can't stand SM's speed. Do you all just ignore this slowness or something?

There's something wrong with your computer. I have a 2.4B P4, 512MB DDR RAM, GF4 Ti4200 128MB. Sure, it's a bit better than yours, but on every one of my computers Stepmania has run better than DWI:
- 366MHz, 192MB SDRAM, VooDoo3: SM ran fine at 800x600, above 60 fps. DWI wouldn't even run.
- 2.4B P4, 512 MB DDR RAM, on board Intel video (before I got the video card): SM runs above 60 fps at 800x600, and DWI lagged quite a bit.
- 2.4B P4, 512MB DDR RAM, GF4 Ti4200 128MB (current specs): SM runs silky smooth at 1280x1024 resolution, above 100 fps, and I get close to 400 at 800x600 resolution. Even with movies and backgrounds on, I still get these framerates.

it's been a while since I've used SM, but my P3 500, 128MB ram with a 64Mb radeon ran SM just fine.

If you gave us info like your graphical settings, it'd be easier to find out why it runs slow.

Are you running 3.0f or the latest intermetidate build? If you're still running 3.0f, try the latest version.

If it's still slower than sludge with that machine, post up your info.txt file (found in the base dir.) and provide some more details -- that's most definalty a bug somewhere, since SM runs ~60fps on my P2-450 with a TNT.

SM lags for me unless I set the resolution to 512x384 or lower.

I didn't believe a machine like that could lag so I went and grabbed the latest build of stepmani, and some random 300bpm original dwi and played it, it was perfectly playable at 5xx x 3xxx with textures set to 512 and vsync on.

P2-300
128mb ram
ATI rage pro 8mb agp video
Windows xp

It wasn't pretty, but it was able pull 60 frames/second. Might be time to reinstall windows and update drivers.

If you're using Stepmania 3.0 final, try Stepmania CVS. If you're using Stepmania CVS, try Stepmania 3.0 final. Usually one or the other tends to work for users. I personally use the CVS. It's cooler. riiight.gif

I haven't experienced any lag problems putting my 256 MB in my computer, only bugs and that's it. And this is Stepmania CVS. E1.gif

Just got CVS - wow, it runs completely flawlessly! Thanks!

But I wonder why the old SM version that I had ran so slow....

I had a problem today with framerate problems out of nowhere. Turns out I had Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering turned on for another application. Check to see if those settings are on.

on my computer 1 - windows xp, pentium 4 2.0 ghz, 512 ddr ram,
geforce 2 pro, SM runs silky smooth 60 frames with background movies on(it had minor slow down on old CVS when i turn on background movie but ever since 6/11 version it's all fixed and run super smooth).

on my computer 2 - windows xp, AMD 1.4 ghz, 256 ddr ram,
geforce fx 5200, SM runs silky smooth 60 frames with background movies
on(i used to use all in wonder radeon 7500 but it could only run SM at around 40 frames per sec with background movies on so i had to upgrade it to gefroce fx 5200 which is $100 now and has tv out put, because i am using this computer for ddr only and it's hooked up to tv riiight.gifE13.gif
